The Wisconsin Pork Association hosted its Seventh Annual Futurity Sale on Saturday, April 11 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Jefferson. Twenty-one Wisconsin pork producers consigned 54 head of crossbred and purebred barrows and gilts to the sale.
The sale averaged $250 per head sold. The top selling animal was a crossbred barrow consigned by Watson Family Farms, Edgerton. The barrow sold for $900, and was purchased by Noah Morris, Clinton. Terry Schmaling called the sale.

All organizations that hold livestock consignment sales in Wisconsin must have them licensed, according to assistant state veterinarian Dr. Paul McGraw. McGraw sent letters to some producers who have organized sales events in the past, reminding them of the licensing requirement, according to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. The state requires all consignment sales, auctions and anyone purchasing and reselling an animal - even for fair projects - to be licensed under state law. |

PLATTEVILLE - Fifty-seven bulls sold for a record-high average April 4 at the Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association bull sale at Pioneer Farm. The bulls averaged $2,155, the highest in the 52-year history of the test. The previous record was set in 2007, when the bulls averaged $2,100. Fifty-seven bulls sold at Saturday's sale, two less than last year. The top-selling bull was an Angus consigned by Hermann Wolters of Cuba City. The bull sold for $4,200 to Biddick of Livingston. The second-highest-selling Angus, consigned by Travis Crist of Darlington, sold for $4,000 to Randy Magg of Spirit Lake, Iowa. The 36 Angus bulls sold for an average of $2,260. |

Besides the brave robins that have made their way back, we have another sign of spring. It’s the championship cheese contest.
The precise name varies a bit every other year. Last year Wisconsin hosted the World Championship Cheese Contest. This time around it hosted the U.S. Championship Cheese Contest.
Last week’s contest took place in Green Bay, in the atrium at Lambeau Field. For several prior years, both the world and U.S. events have alternated between Madison and La Crosse. Wherever they take place, if you like cheese, these contests are the place to be. |

VeraSun Energy’s selection of Valero Renewable Fuels as the successful bidder for several Midwest ethanol production facilities was confirmed last week by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. While the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) expects most 2008 VeraSun contracts to be voided as a result of the auction, it recommends affected farmers confirm this with their local buyers.
According to VeraSun, Valero was the successful bidder for ethanol production plants in Albion, Neb.; Aurora, S.D.; Albert City, Charles City, Fort Dodge and Hartley, Iowa; and Welcome, Minn. The sale also includes a development site in Reynolds, Ind. |
