WPA 7th Annual Futurity Sale Winners Announced

The Wisconsin Pork Association hosted its Seventh Annual Futurity Sale on Saturday, April 11 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Jefferson. Twenty-one Wisconsin pork producers consigned 54 head of crossbred and purebred barrows and gilts to the sale.

The sale averaged $250 per head sold. The top selling animal was a crossbred barrow consigned by Watson Family Farms, Edgerton. The barrow sold for $900, and was purchased by Noah Morris, Clinton. Terry Schmaling called the sale.

To determine sale order, the pigs were sifted by breed and sex. Jeremy Graff, Juneau, judged the sift. Top placing barrow and gilt awards were presented as follows:


- Grand Champion Barrow Overall (Champion Yorkshire Barrow) n Austin & Natalee Lynd, Janesville

- Grand Champion Gilt Overall (Champion Yorkshire Gilt) n Nuttleman Farms, Bangor

- Reserve Grand Champion Barrow Overall (Champion Crossbred Barrow) n Watson Family Farms, Edgerton

- Reserve Grand Champion Gilt Overall (Champion Crossbred Gilt) n Watson Family Farms, Edgerton

- Berkshire: barrow and gilt Theon Ward, Ward Hogs, Elkhorn

- Chester White: barrow and gilt n Jacob Krebs, Krebs Farms, Rio

- Duroc: barrow n John Henrichs, Burlington; gilt n Steve & Collin Keel, Juneau

- Hampshire: barrow n Cody Kuhlmyer, Kuhl Cattle & Pigs, South Wayne; gilt - Devan & Colton Brugger, Monroe

- Hereford Barrow n Ethan Schmaling, New Glarus

- Poland China: barrow n Bruce Schulz Family, Dalton; gilt n Nuttleman Farms, Bangor

A youth educational skillathon was hosted before the sale. Topics included biosecurity, industry facts, and identification of breeds and tools used in the industry. Nearly 30 youth participated. Participants received gift certificates to be used for the purchase of animals in the sale.

Both barrows and gilts purchased at the sale may qualify for premiums at Wisconsin county, district, and state shows. Only pigs sold through the sale are eligible for the premiums.
